Drawing Boundaries Quinn Summitt Dr. Lall English 1A April 13, 2014 Experts in the field of work relations claim that “today, work dominates Americans lives as never before, as workers pile on hours at a rate not seen since the industrial revolution”(Andrew Curry why we work1). In today’s America work outweighs almost every aspect of our life. In todays economy finding work is hard enough so people are willing to do just about anything to keep that job even if that means working long hours and missing out on a well-earned vacation. With technology always at hand work is always right there with you. Low paid jobs demand people to overexert their self’s never turning off work mode. In sum, it is hard for individuals to draw a boundary between professional life and personal life due to the will to keep a job, a technological leash and low wages. Consider today’s economy in which the job market isn’t all that good, so finding work is a job in of its self. For the most part people once they find a job are willing to do anything in order to keep that job. This could mean working long hours, even not taking a much needed vacation. ”A lot of people believe if they do work less they’ll be seen as less committed, and in a shaky economy no one wants that”(Andrew Curry 2). According to Curry people are scared of losing a job because another one is so hard to come by. This in turn makes people feel they have to work long hours or they will be fired or forced to quite but working such long hours can mean losing out on a personal life. A real life example would be my girlfriend Summer who has worked at a restaurant since they opened. At the beginning she worked crazy hours because her work had asked her to. In fear of losing her new job because she didn’t want to be seen as not committed she agreed to the long hours. Working such long hours meant missing out on a lot of
