I. The purpose of our project was to become aware of the problems of homeless people and to have a positive impact in our community for the purpose of disspelling stereotypes about those without homes. Our specific focus was on domestically abused women and their circumstances. We wanted the community to understand how quickly a woman can become destitute when she suffers abuse at the hands of the one who financially supports her. Our first step in achieving our goal was to visit the domestic abuse shelter and to see their living arrangements, as well as to discover how they are able to get their feet on the ground and the obstacles which hold them back. Our next step entailed interviewing two abused women and a staff member of BRASS in order to collect information which will be published for the community to read in a publication. Not only did we learn more about the homeless by coming to them and spending time with them, but we also were able to serve them as we cooked them chili for lunch. When we first deliberated on the best way to serve the homeless and achieve our goals, it seemed wise to contact someone who already had a firm root in this community. When we contacted BRASS, we asked for ideas and ways to help. The idea was proposed for interviewing victims for the purpose of publication in order to have a greater impact. If we had not contacted BRASS, I feel we still would have completed our goals, but certainly with more difficulty because we would not have prior knowledge and experience with which to work. BRASS was a vital tool for the success of the project and supplied not only the opportunities, but the focus and direction as well. It was wise for us to help a sub-group of the homeless community instead of attempting to tackle the entire community. II.
