Recently, I have heard that there are some countries still take dogs as food animals, especially in mainland China and Korea. As a dog lover, I was shocked when I heard about the news. I think it is ruthless to have such a cute animal as food. Dogs have lived with humans as pet for many years. Most of the people consider dogs as their best friends or companion because they are loyal and are able to understand people’s feelings. An organization, Friends of the Earth, illustrate that eating dogs is considered taboo in our culture. However, dogs do not have any inherent characteristics that set them apart from other animals, and dogs are not considered as special animals in ever culture; indeed, no animal is considered sacred or taboo in every culture. Some people argue that one should not eat companion animals, that one should not eat mentally sophisticated animals and that one ought to respect taboos. FOE answers them, dogs are not companion animals everywhere, dogs are no more mentally sophisticate than many other animals, and the taboo on eating dogs is local, limited to our culture. According to the FOE, people should consider the practical implications of adopting canines as a food animal. On the other hand, weakening the taboo on eating dogs could indeed cause great harm. For many people, the love of a dog is their introduction to affection fro animals, their gateway, in a sense, to see the animal world as something other than objects for us to use. Making dogs as a food object would make it impossible to many people to have those feelings for animals. It would encourage people to see all nonhumans as simply resources for our consumption. Although FOB seems to suggest that people should look critically at dogs, rather than sentimentally because it will encourage us to treat existing food animals better; however, it might be more likely to make us treat
