George Russell states that the disaster is called “the largest mass suicide of Americans in history”, supporting the claim that the participants in the Peoples Temple intentionally killed themselves (38+). Russell also explains that Jones was very intent on his ‘revolutionary suicide’ and that he kept bringing it up, and during his final speech he claimed that it was the only way out (38+). Richard Cavendish claims that many of the churches believers “willingly killed their children and themselves” (13). Evidently, numerous people in Jones’ following actually believed his words and trusted him enough to put their lives in his hands. In fact, Thomas Streissguth points out that Jones was a believer of socialism, and that he was so aggressively persuasive about his standing that members of his congregation were compelled to donate all of their belongings and funds to the church (105).
Bowling for Columbine, a documentary written and directed by Mr Michael Moore in 2002 after the horrific shooting at Columbine High School, on April 20th 1999. Not long after the shooting, Americans were quick to blame violent video games, movies and heavy metal music artists. Mr Moore believes that this is not the reason, but believes that it was caused by America's relaxed gun laws. Through the use of technical, written and audio codes Moore did an excellent job at portraying his negative views about America's gun laws and how racist America is. In this documentary Mr More used an audio code known as a voice over, one example is where he showed us a film of buildings being blown up and saying over the top of this clip “and the president ordered the bombing of another country we couldn’t pronounce”.
Armed with a desire to change the world, young people took to song lyrics and innovative sounds to communicate their ideas on how the world and society should be shaped. As a result of the baby boom of the 1940s to the 1950s, over half of the population in the sixties was under 30 years old (“The Counterculture”). The youth was apparent all over the country, as the need to rebel against the conservative beliefs of adults ignited a willingness to challenge authority, increased social tolerance, changed attitudes about gender roles, and increased political interest, thereby creating the counterculture. As the decade progressed, tensions grew within American society that only seemed to attract more and more followers to the movement (Law). The American civil rights movement, for example, became a key element of counterculture and seemed to represent exactly what these young Americans stood for.
In the past she had parodied other female celebrities such as Britney Spears. From all the albums he has made throught the years, I would have to say that my favorite would be Brutal Planet. It has that hard rock feel while having some violent lyrics. An example of this would be in the first song that talks about Earth’s history in the view of the Bible, saying that we are living in a world that is considered like Hell. Another song spoke about school shootings, mainly as a response to the news reporters blaming him as one of the causes for the Columbine School
Even television tried to clean up the image of Rock-n-Roll with shows like American Bandstand, hosted be Dick Clark. He promoted good, clean fun for teens by having artist perform songs that parents would approve of. He also made strict guidelines for dress codes for the teens on his show as wells as how they danced. There were even artist, such as Pat Boone, who took pride in setting a good example for teenagers. He even wrote a book to encourage teens to do the right things by their parents, and also practice abstinence until marriage.
The Columbine massacre, caused by the devious and hatred filled minds of two young individuals, claimed the lives of many other students and also made the U.S. to take a better look at how unprotected the schools are. The massacre occurred on Tuesday, April 20,1999, at Columbine High School in Jefferson County, Colorado. Two students, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, embarked on a shooting rampage, killing 12 students and a teacher, as well as wounding 23 others, before committing suicide. School teachers should not be armed with guns Audience: People who believe that school teachers should carry guns Purpose: To present alternate security measures in schools instead of teachers being armed with guns Situation/Occasion: Too many shootings in our schools Voice: Person against school teachers carrying guns Three hundred and twenty-three students have died in documented school shootings over the past 15 years according to ABC News. Below are some of the most tragic incidents. The Columbine High School massacre in April of 1999 resulted in the death of twelve students and one teacher. Twenty-four additional students were injured. In April of 2007 a mass murder took place on the VA Tech campus in Blacksburg, VA, where thirty-three people were killed and fifteen others were wounded.
The Kent State shooting was one of the major shootings and many people were hurt. This shooting occurred on May 4th, 1970 in Kent, Ohio. Involved in the shooting were unarmed college students by the Ohio National Guard. The students fired sixty seven rounds in thirteen seconds, killing four students, wounding nine, and permanently paralyzing one (Jerry M. Lewis). Many of the students were only doing meaningless things and got shot for small things such as throwing rocks.
Healy and Frosch begin Source A by introducing the main cause for the new focus on gun control, the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School. This shooting has sparked debates all over the United States but heavily in Colorado. Colorado itself has faced major tragedy recently, the Aurora Theater Shooting left twelve dead and a nation stunned. In addition, in 1999 Columbine High School in suburban Denver was attacked. With this extensive history of gun related tragedy, and a gun favoring majority population, Colorado has become a testing ground for new laws on gun control.
The results from both studies are consistent with the General Affective Aggression Model, which predicts that exposure to violent video games will increase aggressive behavior in both the short term (e.g., laboratory aggression) and the long term (e.g., delinquency). On April 20, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold launched an assault on Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, murdering 13 and wounding 23 before turning the guns on themselves. Although it is impossible to know exactly what caused these teens to attack their own classmates and teachers, a number of factors probably were involved. One possible contributing factor is violent video games. Harris and Klebold enjoyed playing the bloody, shoot-'em-up video game Doom, a game licensed by the U.S. military to train soldiers to effectively kill.
