Does modern technology always improve the quality of people’s lives? From CRT to LCD to LED to the latest OLED television screens, technology has been improving at an accelerating pace. Such technology advancement is usually fuelled by human’s innate desire to obtain higher quality products and services that allows increased accessibility, freedom and convenience, and the quality of life. Because of the elusive definition of the quality of life, since it could refer to both the material and mental well-being of the people, whether modern technology always improves the quality of people’s lives is extremely debatable. While modern technology always improves the quality of people’s lives in one aspect, it also almost always deteriorates the quality of people’s lives in another aspect. Modern consumer electronics have been revolutionised with the introduction of smartphones and tablet computers. Big players such Apple and Android, have unveiled successively better and more efficient technology and operating systems that allows us to do more things on our phones than ever before. The Apple slogan ‘there’s an app for that’ is the exact definition. Hundreds of thousands of applications available on the App Store and Google Play offer a seemingly endless catalogue of opportunities for the phone. You can browse movie showtimes, access webpages, send emails, stream high definition movies and shop online with just a small portable devise. Phone is now not limited to calling and texting. In fact, it is now used less for its basic functions, but more for its entertainment. And if you think this is only for the rich, then you are absolutely wrong.
