I agree that traditional Chinese family concepts are collapsing under reform and opening-up based on three reasons which including the influence of individualism, increasing awareness of equality and the implementation of family planning policy. Individualism has weakened the binding power of the traditional concepts of family. The traditional family ethics advocates continuation of bloodline and solidarity of the family so they have those traditional concepts like ‘getting married once a person comes of age’ and ‘giving birth and raising a child early for more sons equals more blessing’. However, all these concepts are weakened under the influence of Individualism. According to source one, it revealed that industrial civilization has made modern people aware about their personal freedom. And this delays people’s decision to get married and reduces parents’ intervention in their children’s decisions about marriage. Also as both men and women work outside, financial independence can be achieved. Furthermore, due to the modern concepts of free love and marriage, the incidence of divorce has increased. As a result, traditional Chinese family concepts are no longer accepted by modern people anymore and have generally replaced by modern family concepts. The awareness of equality is also derived from individualism. In the ancient time, the father is the head of a household. Women’s status is very low and they needed to obey what their husband said. Also they could not work outside but they had to stay at home taking care of their children and the elderly. However, the spread of education and exposing to western cultures increases people’s awareness about equality. And there must be equal opportunities in society without differentiation.
