Do Video Games Cause Violence? Video games have always had a bad reputation. Most of the bad effects blamed on video games are due to violence. It is thought that people who play violent video games are more likely to show increased aggression. Video games have been blamed for school shootings, bullying, and violence towards women. However, the scientific evidence proving that assertion is flawed and inconsistent. It would take years of unethical observation to even reach a yes or no answer. The debate over violent video games starts back in 1976 when the game “Death Race” was released. It then continues because of games like Mortal Kombat, Night Trap, Grand Theft Auto, Halo, and Call of Duty. People have failed to look past the violence of video games and realize that they help promote brain growth and development, they create a healthy outlet for aggression, and most people who become violent have experienced violence. Studies show that playing fast paced action or violent video games helps improve skills in vision, attention, and aspects of cognition. It is said that video gamers have a specific kind of vision called, “contrast sensitivity” meaning they have the ability to see subtle shades of gray. That might not sound like an improvement but it helps driving through fog; enabling you to see cars that are ahead of you. Gamers are also able to read smaller type size on vision tests. Gaming also improves visual attention meaning how we select relevant visual information and suppress irrelevant information. It’s crucial in preventing sensory overload and is emphasized during visually demanding activities like driving, or recognizing faces. As drivers we have to pay attention to what is going on around as anything could happen in a matter of a second.
