Many studies and statistics will back up both sides to this debate leaving the controversy still being debated. This paper will cover three articles that cover both sides to this debate as well as some statistics that will still not prove which side is correct. Video games such as shooting games that demonstrate violent behavior have been linked to many violent acts that teens and children have done. The Columbine high school shooting that took place in 1999 the victim’s families blamed video games for the acts of the shooters (Cate, 2013). Every bad experience or violent act that has been seen in the public somehow will get linked to violent video games causing the violent acts of the people that do the crimes.
The harm that video games cause can be evaluated by many different factors, and the most obvious among them is the negative effects they can have on physical health. Some experts in the video gaming industry can claim that the first-person shooters and real-time strategies sharpen reflexes, increase concentration and muscle coordination, in reality, youth who spend an ample amount of time playing video games experience effects which are not so beneficial at all. There is a possibility of the vision impairments. “Playing video games for extended amounts of time can cause children to experience many of the same symptoms seen in computer vision syndrome in adults. Extensive viewing of the game screen can lead to eye discomfort, fatigue, blurry vision and headaches.” (Bedinghaus, Troy) Vision impairments can cause many negative effects on a persons quality of life and can last a lifetime.
But long ago violent games were invented based on violent movies so if someone says it causes aggression then some movies in the world cause aggression too. Violent video games also improve your memory due to finding attacks that work best and you try harder to remember them. They also help you with map work coordinates, self positioning, knowing your surroundings and remembering that you have been in this certain place before. So I think people have their own opinions but I think I have proved a few good points and the violent games were created by people who were aggressive from the start. Everyone deals with stress and frustrations differently.
With RPG (role playing games) becoming ever more so popular, so does the demand for realistic violence in them. Commonly, children tend to imitate what they see but what causes a child to actually act out in violence? Some would argue it’s the violent games that are the cause for violence in youths today. Not surprisingly, this theory is not doubted by many. Many would say and some may agree that the reason is that video games these days are too close to reality.
Excessive playing of video game can cause violence, addiction, and poor academic performance in children. During the past years, the playing of video games was investigated to observe and analyze its negative impact on children. Violence, addiction and poor academic performance were determined as some of the negative effect of video games on children. Video games over the last 30 years have made an impact on the way children spend their leisure time, by keeping them from being bored, but also have caused children to develop violent skills the use to hurts the society. Many of today's video games, especially the ones that are suitable for young boys, focus their attention on
At a young age, children's minds are sponge-like, absorbing everything that surrounds them, which makes them easy targets in terms of manipulation and victimized by violent video games. Violent games might seem like harmless fun, but what if the violence attracts and addicts young players, affecting their behavior and their view of reality? Problem: Should Violent Video Games Be Monitored Some say that violent video games have minimal impact on young teenagers, pointing out that most video-game player’s live completely normal lives. The weaknesses in that argument are almost too obvious: first of all just because a player does not immediately imitate specific violent acts found in video games does not mean the games will not have any long-term negative effect on that player’s views and behavior. Because of this possibility, parents should assume responsibility for evaluating video games and should prohibit young teenagers from purchasing those that are especially violent.
The boys told the investigators that they decided to go on a shooting spree after playing the video game Grand Theft Auto III. That particular game is one of the most popular games in which players can play missions that involve killing people or just play at random and go on shooting sprees. Although this game is far less violent and gory than other games, it does have enough influence to make two teens’ fire shots at their own family. The biggest factor to the video game violence is the fact that parents go out and buy these games without knowing that their child may be addicted to the game. If the chid is abusing the game it can become very addictive.
Teen Violence and Video Games As a teen, I would spend hours sitting in front of the television playing Space Invaders on the original Atari Game System and that was over thirty years ago. The games and graphics from the mid-eighties don’t compare to the high definition graphics and realistic game play of today’s game systems. However, because of their realistic graphics and game play, video games are being accused of distorting teen’s minds into not being able to distinguish reality from fantasy. This distortion of the mind is said to cause aggressive and violent behaviors in teens. In some cases, it was alleged to be the cause for the teen to kill.
Video games can help with a person’s hand/eye coordination, aid with stress and anger release, and develop the social capabilities of an individual. Video games are a positive and fun way to become something one could not in real life and help aid with creativity. The proposals that video games can cause increased violence, addiction, prejudice, and sexual instability in most adolescents are absurd, and the flaws in those arguments are almost too Fagan 2 obvious. First, what is to say that these effects are life-long? These affects may only last a little bit, and can thus be cured.
There needs to be more research conducted, analyzed, and published for anyone to make such claims. Most of the studies that have been conducted all say in the end that there just isn't enough data to see such a trend emerging. I feel that violent video games can help reduce stress and anger by providing an outlet for tension, taking stress out on characters in the game instead of real life, and providing motivation to consistently achieve higher scores or levels.
