Do Bad Things Happen to Good People?

Why do bad things happen to good people? Does the book of Job help here? I’ve been asked before, if God is so loving and we are forgiven then why does God let the innocent and defenseless suffer so? Even my own sister when we were younger said that she didn’t believe in God, because if He did exist then he wouldn’t have let us suffer so much at the hands of the people who were supposed to love us. After my step-father died she did a complete 180 and started going to church and brought up my nephew and niece believing in God. For her it took the death of him to move closer to God. Therefore God used the death of our step-father to bring my sister closer to him. I’ve told her and others that God doesn’t cause our suffering; that it is caused by evilness or pain of some people. The suffering that we go through brings us closer to God; it also tests our faith. When I was around 17 or 18 years old my step-father took my brother, sister and I to the park to explain how he was brought up with his family. My grandmother that was so good to the grandchildren was a very strict and abusive mother to her children. She would go out with my grandfather and come home late after partying and she would go through their clothes drawers and if one item of clothing wasn’t folded correctly she would dump all the clothing on the floor and make them fold the clothes correctly and if they didn’t move quickly enough she would beat them, or if she went to get a dish out of the cupboard and it was dirty all the dishes in the house would have to washed again. She would beat them until they urinated on themselves and then would hit them again because they did. He wasn’t trying to excuse what he went through but was trying to explain what he had gone through. I had forgiven him a couple of years later a few months before he passed away. I will always be grateful that I forgave him and he knew
