Diversity Is Important for an Effective Education. Do You Agree?

Education exists in many forms to empower people with new knowledge and skills. However, the predominant form of education will be through schooling. In many countries, the burden of creating a good education lies with the government. Through an effective education, the government, hopes to create a batch of people that have acquired basic moral concepts skills that can be applied in the real world and possess and display deep understanding and knowledge on various aspects of the world. In many educational institutions, there is diversity in race, ethnicity, religion and many other things. I feel that diversity in schools’ student bodies, faculties and staff is important for an effective and quality education for students. Diversity in the learning capabilities of students in a classroom is unimportant and not needed in the classroom. It may even hinder the learning process. If a classroom is very diverse in learning capabilities, it hence makes it difficult for the teacher to find an appropriate way to connect to and educate all of the students in the classroom at an appropriate pace. For example, if a teacher uses a structured traditional teaching approach in a classroom which involves lecturing straight to the students at the front of the classroom, usually with the aid of a whiteboard or powerpoint slides, the students with non-traditional abilities are left behind because the students may have different learning paces. In primary and secondary schools in Singapore, students are banded according to their aptitude. This facilitates the teaching and learning process as the teacher is able to teach at a pace that is appropriate for all the students in the class. Hence, the students will be able to learn as effectively as possible. Sometimes, the diversity in the syllabi taught will not be helpful to students. If there is too wide of an array of subjects for
