Some may say that Henry was largely successful in achieving his aims with his biggest success being the battle of the spurs in 1513. Henry VIII want to be seen as a different king to his father who had a bad reputation for being aware of his money and not engaging in many wars which the nobilities did not like. He started by giving away the crowns land and gave many titles to the nobilities to prove that he would be different to his father. Catherine of Aragon, who had married Henry’s brother Arthur was still kept in England after Arthur had died. Henry had immediately married her after all the delays that his father had caused.
Why did Wolsey fall from power in 1529? Thomas Wolsey was Henry VIII’s Lord Chancellor and he held many positions within the government and clergy. Starting off with a humble background Wolsey worked his way up the country’s hierarchy and became the most powerful man in Britain. However it all went wrong for Wolsey and a culmination of factors ended up with his fall from grace in 1529. Wolsey’s rise to power was a mixture of both luck and skill.
Wolsey changed areas of government such as the justice system and revised areas such as finances and parliament structure. His relationship with the King was significant, as he would be the higher power and would need to negotiate with the King and yet still get the correct decision. Wolsey managed his relationship with henry well, he tried to get the right outcome for the country but never forced it upon Henry, not damaging their relationship and keeping Wolsey in power. Wolsey had a poor approach with justice; in court he gained a poor reputation for taking bribes and his relationship with England’s nobility was poor to say the least. The financial approach was a tough period in finance; with a King that wanted to spend and go to war, and Wolsey had no choice but to bow to his majesty’s request.
John came from a very wealthy family which made him feel out of place because he was not the average rich, snobby kid. He wanted to make his own future for himself and not get tied down with having to please his father in every little thing he did. John committing suicide just shows the extent to which he felt out of place, so much that he did not want to live with the people that made him feel this way. Looking for Alibrandi is a book where many characters feel out of place and did not belong, in a certain point during their life. Josie feels out of place because of the way she has been bought differently compared to her peers at school.
“Somerset and Northumberland were effective and capable rulers” Assess the validity of this interpretation. Throughout the reigns of both Northumberland and Somerset there were inevitably issues and successes on both sides. The factors we can assess are Religion, social and economic and finally foreign policy. Northumberland undoubtedly had his problems, as did Somerset, although it is clear that both were capable rulers it was just the situations they both inherited that caused their downfalls. Northumberland’s religious views were unclear as he seemed to drift between beliefs in order to achieve the most power possible for himself.
The personal impact of these events have been apparent to me. By examining the acts of moral courage displayed by Galileo, we can make a direct relation to the holocaust, and understand the personal impact of both stories, it is clear that I have changed as a person from the impact of the connection between Galileo’s acts of moral courage and the example from the holocaust. Galileo Galilei is such an important person in history. All though the Copernican theory was proven later on in history, his ideas and thoughts were rejected, due to popular belief of the church and most people. “His flair for self-promotion earned him powerful friends among Italy’s ruling elite and enemies among the Catholic Church’s
He was also a good king because he looked good and he kept law and order yet in the rest of his jobs he was quite a bad king for example when he did help the church etc. he only helped the church when it best suited him and didn’t listen to the barons . Based on my finding, I believe that the Magna Carta was one main reason as to why the rebellion started because and that king john only signed the Magna Carta so that he could build up his army the barons rebelled for a number of reasons including the trust between the king and the
Law & Popular Culture Can the Lex Populi increase access to the Legal System? There exists much argument in the legal profession that the Lex Populi, or law in popular culture, serves no purpose other then that of entertainment. Modern depictions of lawyers, the courtroom, judges and the legal system are criticised because they have little substantial value and are an inaccurate portrayal of the law in action. This paper considers that argument and examines the way in which law in popular culture can have a positive effect on increasing the lay man’s access to the legal system. Discussion centres around concepts of the lawyer as a translator, how the Lex Populi diminishes the value of the legal system because of its inaccuracies, the positives of law being depicted in popular culture and the role of the media and its influence on access to the legal system.
During the Middle Ages, and even during the Renaissance democracy did not exist. The Catholic Church had absolute power over the Government as well as society in general because of the fact that so many people had not much to look forward to but going to heaven. This gave the Church the most power to rule over it’s citizens because people were afraid that if they were to disobey the Church they would be excommunicated from the Church and ultimately would not be able to go to heaven. However, during part of the Renaissance, the values of people began to change. The views of people became more secular, and the focus of education was pretty much to make a well-rounded ideal citizen, which means instead of religion being the main focus, humanism began to be shown.
