In recent years, there has been a greater focus on the importance of assessment; there have been many studies, which have examined the most effective ways to assess pupils and monitor their learning. My main focus in this essay will be upon formative and summative assessment. I will also briefly consider diagnostic assessment. I will explore the effectiveness, benefits and disadvantages of adopting various forms of assessment. By drawing upon research conducted by a wide range of institutions and individuals and my own experiences, I intend to analyse the contribution assessment makes towards pupils’ learning. Formative assessment is undeniably essential for pupils’ learning; pupils thrive on constant feedback and support, without it, it would be difficult for students to learn from their mistakes. Formative assessment ensures instant appraisal. Dunn discusses “instant, positive and verbal praise” and states: This is formative marking and has been shown to have the greatest effect on pupils because of its immediacy, which has a positive, motivational effect upon them. (Dunn, 2005:41) This form of assessment would be particularly beneficial for boys as it generates interest, challenge and an element of competition, something that many students thrive on. It would not be possible for students to learn if their errors and mistakes were not highlighted. An OFSTED report on secondary schools noted that, Marking is often conscientious but often fails to offer guidance on how work can be improved... marking reinforces under achievement by being too generous. (OFSTED, 1996:40) This report suggests that teachers are often too conscientious and caring when marking work, this therefore has a negative impact upon the pupils’ learning because they perceive their work
