Discrimination Worksheet Write a 100- to 200-word response to each of the following questions. Provide citations for all the sources you use. • What is discrimination? How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping? Prejudice is a feeling of dislike towards a person or a group of people based on race, ethnicity, gender, religion, and anything else that might set a person or group of people out as being different. Discrimination is the denial of opportunities and equal rights to people and groups of people because of prejudice. Stereotypes are a generalization of a group of people, usually an inaccurate generalization. (Schaefer, 2013) Prejudice and stereotyping are not actions. Discrimination is different because it is an action against a person or a group of people. • What are the causes of discrimination? There are several causes of discrimination. Ignorance, fear, stereotyping, irresponsible behavior by politicians, the media and other influential groups, and religious or cultural beliefs. Some peoples beliefs stem from their family. If parents are prejudice against a certain group or if they treat certain types of people in a different way than they do others, children will most likely (not always) follow in their footsteps. Religion is a big influence on discrimination. It segregates people into religious categories and fosters attitudes towards others that may be prejudice. Ignorance and fear are also strong influences simply because people fear what they do not know. Stereotyping may be more influential than anything else. Stereotypes are prevalent everywhere and in everything. When people are grouped into categories, regardless of what they might be, prejudice will most likely occur, and through prejudice comes discrimination.
