Discipline, Management, Behavior and Misbehavior…Are they related? Jennifer L Givens Grand Canyon University: EDU-536 July 17, 2013 Discipline, Management, Behavior and Misbehavior…Are they related? “One of these things is not like the other. One of these things just doesn’t belong.” (Raoaso, J and Stone, J,. n.d.). How many times has a child learned how things work together through this song on Sesame Street? One might look at these four words and decide that one doesn’t belong in the same group as the other three. But a teacher should look at these four words and know that they are all commonly used in the classroom setting and are very important when it comes to defining the running and operation of an effective classroom. Merriam-Webster defines each of these words as follows: Discipline – Punishment; Instruction; a field of study; training that corrects, molds or perfects the mental faculties or moral character; self-control; a rule or system of rules governing conduct or activity Management – the act or art of managing: the conducting or supervising of something (as a business); judicious use of means to accomplish an end. Behavior – the manner of conducting oneself; the response of an individual, group, or species to its environment; the way in which someone behaves. Misbehavior – (mis-) – badly: wrongly; unfavorably; in a suspicious manner; bad: wrong; not. (www.merriam-webster.com) One might say the act of not behaving. Although they each have a separate and distinct meaning an effective teacher cannot have a successful classroom without looking at and knowing the meaning of each of them. Let us look at how these words compare and contrast. Discipline and Management Classroom management and classroom discipline are actually two very distinct concepts. When we refer to how things are done in the classroom we are talking about
