Most people were distracted by all the fire and such that they didn’t move a one bit; they just stood there. Climax- At 9:06 am, the bumping ship explosion. Many of the spectators on the shore on the buildings around them also vanished. 1600 people were killed in the explosion including the Captains. Out of 9000 were injured, and flying glass were blinding 200 people.
Joseph Walker 2/10/12 Intro to Security The Station Nightclub Fire There were many issues regarding this nightclub that caused this horrible fire that claimed the lives of 100 people. There were a couple threats involved that made this fire so bad. The main threat that happened was the pyrotechnics failed and ignited a flame on the stage. One of the bad design flaws of this building was that they used a highly flammable insulation. This insulation is known as polyurethane foam insulation.
It was an important event because so many people died when the ship sank, partly because of the lack of lifeboats, after the sinking no ship was allowed to set sail unless there were enough lifeboats for everyone on the ship. It was called one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters. I think that the titanic is still talked about because it’s a technological story, where everything seemed to be right with the ship then things went not only wrong, but so horribly wrong, so quickly that it captured people’s imagination at the time.
All hazards, whether natural, technological or war hazards, are able to cause loss of life, property damage, and various secondary effects1. Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans in 2005, is a recent natural disaster that will be remembered by many as one of the most deadly hurricanes in history6. The sinking of the RMS Titanic, in April 1912, which many believe to have been caused by a collision with an iceberg, was in fact caused by its poor technology3, making it one of the most memorable historical technological disasters to have ever occurred. While these two disasters may seem unsurpassed, they will be analyzed and compared, in order to determine possible similarities and differences that relate to the disasters’ elements of risk. (i) Description of Disasters: Hurricane Katrina is said to have been the most costly and deadliest hurricanes in U.S history, resulting in $81.2 billion dollars in damage and 1836 casualties6.
On May seventh 1915 there was a very sad tragic day for 128 Americans and families. A “merchant” ship known as the Lusitania was sailing close to the shore where German U-boats like to hang around and was torpedoed and had many people die from an explosion. The British still to this day blame it all on the Germans. But as I go on in my paper you will realize that Germany was justified to sink the boat. Fist off, the Germans had warned them weeks maybe even months back, that if any ships consulting or flying the British flag will be torpedoed after all passengers are off the ship; and this was published in the NEW YORK TIMES and all newspapers throughout the country.
But after Candide, Jacques, and Pangloss ship off to Lisbon, Portugal, their hope is shattered. A great storm kills their entire ship full of people besides Candide, Pangloss, and a crewman who happened to push Jacques overboard. After the two characters struggle their way onto the shore of Lisbon, an earthquake happens. This section of the story is probably at the lowest part of Candide’s optimistic level. The Lisbon people soon have an auto-da-fé, where many people are tortured and killed.
About 4,000 people who lived there were evacuated by boat. The town of Futaleufu, with about 1,000 residents, was also evacuated. Smaller communities to the southeast such as Chubut and Rio Negro also received heavy ash falls. The ash plume was so thick in some parts of Argentina that schools, highways and airports were forced to close. Indeed, Chaitén was a major concern to both the airline industry and the neighbouring country of Argentina.
This area is one of the densest concentrations of sea birds anywhere in the whole world. At this point in it's journey Katrina was a category 2 hurricane and brought winds of of 105 miles per hour or 170 kilometres hour.
Crane showed us how the world is unpredictable in the Open Boat, all of the four people on the boat did hard to help each other and support each other. The oiler Billy is the one who did most and the one is strongest. Readers might think that he is not going to be the one who dies, but the ending is surprising that the oiler died. The story told readers that everyone in the world has equal chance to die no matter what you did which shows how unpredictable the world is.
