Disadvantages of Civil Marriage My personal opinion is that the form of civil marriage does not have any disadvantages when compared to traditional religion-based marriage. Why do you ask? Simple. It’s basically the same thing. To get married, either by the church or by the court, you need to fill the same exact paperwork, and go through the same exact process, except that when getting married by faith, some churches and religious groups require that the couple go through spiritual marriage counseling; In a way that’s a good thing, because it prepares you for living a lifetime together with your “other half”. Another reason to why civil and traditional marriages are the same thing is due to the fact that church-conducted marriages are under the umbrella of the state, the law. At its core, marriage is a legal process that has to abide by the laws of the state. Personally I would prefer to get married by the church, because of my religious beliefs and to have a blessed marriage. Not because there’s anything wrong with civil marriage, but because the way you get married is a personal decision. Civil Marriages are more adequate to people that want a speedy marriage, that do not have a religious faith, or for same-sex couples. There are no advantages or disadvantages over choosing getting married by the court, sans-religion. The only things that you will be missing out on would be the “celebration” that comes with a traditional marriage, the pastor’s blessing for your life together, and the spiritual pre-marital counseling that takes place before getting married.
