DINNER RESERVATIONS Case Analysis Symptoms · Expenses for meals, travel, and entertainment are very large. · Rebecca’s perception of Anna’s expenses is negative. · Bad public perception of the organization. · Budget for expenses has doubled since Anna was hired. · Anna is annoyed about the Board questioning her about the expenses. · The board has a perception that Anna spends most her time “wining and dining”. Causes · Rebecca has only been working with Strong and Smart for 3 months. · Rebecca does not know about the substantial increase in funding since Anna became the chief executive. · Rebecca has only served on boards of smaller organizations; therefore, she is not familiar with the operations and expenses of a larger organization. · Rebecca believes expenses for meals, travel, and entertainment can easily be misused by chief executives and senior staff. · Anna believes that “you have to spend money to make money” and has the board convinced; the budget for meals and entertainment had doubled since hiring Anna. · Anna may be pressured to continually increase funding for the organization; one of the reasons for hiring her was to increase funding for the organization. · Anna feels that her high expenses and time spent on “wining and dining” are appropriate because all of her peers engage in similar activities. As well, she believes that it can be justified by the substantial increase in funding and awareness of the organization. · Anna is too confident about her performance; she expects excellent marks on her upcoming evaluation.
