Was the Trojan War Real? The Iliad and The Odyssey are two of the most told stories in history, and both feature the Trojan War and the city of Troy. These stories have led many people to ask the question, “Did any of this really happen?” Although there have been many reasons leading people to believe that the Trojan War did not exist, the Trojan War did exist, as proved through archaeology and history. To prove whether an event occurred or not, we must first prove that the event site existed; the event site being Troy, and we can prove that mainly through archaeology. (Korfmann) Over the years, there has been much speculation around whether or not Troy existed, and the main problem was that no one knew where to start. The city of Troy is widely regarded as being abandoned a long time ago, so “archaeologists have been reluctant to start excavating blindly” (The Discovery of Troy). However, there was one man, a very famous archaeologist in his time, by the name of Heinrich Schliemann who believed that the city of Troy laid somewhere in Turkey, more precisely Pinarbasi. But after several months of finding nothing, he then moved his search to Hislarik. (Faulkner) After many months of excavations in Hislarik, Schliemann started to discover subtle evidence, such as small ruins and temples, but after several more months, Schliemann found his “convincing factor” (The Discovery of Troy). After raiding one temple, Schliemann discovered copper heads, cups of gold, silver, and electrum, which he believed was “Priam’s Treasure.” “Priam, according to The Iliad, was King at the time of the Trojan War.” (Priam) Schliemann also discovered a gold wire necklace, with no less than 16,000 little pieces of gold attached to it, which Schliemann named the “Jewels of Helen.” The single most spectacular discovery was made at the very end of the final season, in
