Cohen Health 16 November 2010 Reactions to “Through a Blue Lens” The documentary “Through a Blue Lens” was quite an unexpected surprise. Well at least according to me. I expected to see an anti-drug documentary, produced on a low budget, that was very old and hardly relatable that was supposed to scare me with all the horribly disgusting effects of drugs, but I was instead confronted with the “compassionate” and “human” underbelly of the skids in Vancouver. This sudden turn of events, left me quite dumbfounded, of which I found truly remarkable for such a measly thing as a film. The documentary quickly overturned and far exceeded my expectations when the police officers actually started socializing with the addicts as if they were friends from long ago.

devil in the white city: burnham vs. holmes Erik Larson writes, “Beneath the gore and smoke and loom, this book is about the evanescence of life, and why some men choose to fill their brief allotment of time engaging in the impossible, others in the manufacture of sorrow. Larson’s purpose is to compare and contrast the two main characters, Daniel Burnham and Henry H. Holmes. One is a successful architect and the other is a successful serial killer. Burnham was the famous architect that built the World’s Fair in less than two years. Holmes is America’s first serial killer.

Another example of betrayal in the movie Mean Girls would be when Cady gets all of Regina’s good friends to turn against her. Another good example would be when Janis Ian gets mad at Cady because Cady starts to get sucked into the popularity, this also shows betrayal. These all are examples of betrayal that portray the theme “you have to be careful who you trust”. In the play Julius Caesar the character Cassius is plotting against the main character Julius Caesar. Caesar thinks Cassius is a good man and that he will not cause any trouble.
Although these two are the most prominent, they are not the most important. The most important is the sociological concept primary socialization, but is not displayed until later. First Racism is introduced in the opening scenes through the use of derogatory terms. The main character, Derek Vineyard, begins to refer to African Americans and other minorities as parasites and problems in the United States. In this same scene he also shows views of white supremacy because he states that minorities come to America only to exploit it as opposed to establishing themselves as “model citizens”.
It was the fact that the whites believed that they had this power over the African Americans and that it was there right in taking it and abusing their power. Richard gets a job at an optical shop in Jackson and right away two of his white co-workers yell crude words and try in any way to intimidate him. At one point they almost threaten to kill him and frightens Richard to quit the job knowing that he no longer would be safe there. Mr. Crane, Richard’s boss, is a kind man who is from the North and sympathizes Wright. He asks Richard what the co-workers had said and that they would be punished but Richard’s fear is too great and just accepts his pay and leaves.
Equality Opportunity’ in that the burdens of racism can only be overcome by taking race into account. Affirmative action also aims to reflect the racial diversity of the nation, the ‘Equality of Results’, within schools, the firm and the workplace. Despite being mainly supported by Democrats, and rejected by Republicans President Nixon played a significant role in affirmative action by instituting ‘set aside’ policies to reserve a certain percentage for minorities. The main advantage of affirmative action is that is leads to a greater diversity in societies main institutions, arguably this would not be achieved had things been left as they were. It is also argued on the basis of righting those previously wronged, by opening areas of education and employment that would not have previously been available to minorities.
The characters include an African-American detective who is alienated by his mother, and has a gang related brother; a Caucasian District Attorney who has a spoiled wife; a racist police officer with an idealist partner; an African American Hollywood director; a Persian store owner; and a Hispanic locksmith. Crash has an All Star cast which includes Don Cheadle, Sandra Bullock, Matt Dillon, Brendan Fraser, Ryan Phillipe, Terrence Howard, and Thandie Newton. This film portrays racism, but not in the same way as other films about racism. In this film, the victims of racism are also the offenders as different situations and contexts are depicted. Comments about racism are not meant to be cruel; actions and comments made about race come from misconceptions and ignorance about other races.
