INTRODUCTION In this assignment, I am going to explore the development of psychology, sociology, and social policy issues affecting public health and how they are encompassed within nursing and the scenario involving Danny. I will demonstrate how these issues relate to an individual, their families, and communities as a whole. I will then describe inequalities, discrimination, and how we manage society’s differences. I will give an outlining definition of what each of the terms psychology, sociology and social policy means. From reading each of the five scenarios, I have chosen Danny the 33 year old, and I am going to describe the impact of drinking excessive alcohol on his health and his family. I am also going to compare statistics on alcohol related health problems in Sheffield to the national statistics, patterns, and trends. I will discuss health promotion and how this is implemented. Studies in England have shown that a quarter of adults aged 16-24 were drinking more than the recommended limits. It also showed 8.2 million adults were in need of some form of medical intervention (Drummond et al, 2004). SOCIOLOGY- The definition of sociology is the study and understanding of society, origin, development, and structure of human societies. (Oxford mini dictionary for nurses, 2011). It also studies the behaviour of individuals and groups within society. It studies human relationships, and provides criteria andguides for people to take into account of their daily behaviour (Albrow, 1999). Referring back to Danny and his excessive drinking, sociological factors of his behaviour would include, why does he drink so much? Are his class and income related to the problem?
