Outreach and detached youth work Outreach youth work is the provision of services to young people who might not otherwise have access to those services. The main aim of outreach is that the providers of this work are not stationary, but mobile; in other words they are meeting those in need of outreach services at the locations where those in need are. In this circumstance working with young people in their own environment. In addition to delivering services, outreach has an educational role, raising the awareness of existing services. This can be done through the use of leaflets, newsletters, advertising, dedicated events and using places such as libraries or community centres to inform and advise. Outreach is often meant to fill in the gap in the services provided by mainstream services who sometimes have centre based amenities not accessed by a number of young people for a variety of reasons. This type of work and is often carried out by non-profit organisations. There are several types of outreach work * Domiciliary - undertaken at individual homes * Detached – undertaken in public environments and targeting individuals * Peripatetic – undertaken at public or private environments and targeting organisations rather than individuals * Satellite – where services are provided at a dedicated site Outreach is a form of youth work that takes place within young people’s own environment. This is a method of work that both supports and compliments new and existing centre/project based youth work. This is primarily used to inform young people of services that exist in their locality and to encourage them to use such services, Outreach can also seek to identify, through consultation with young people, any gaps that exist in services aimed at meeting their needs. As opposed to Detached work, Outreach is seen as an extension to centre based work. This type
