Eng111_107 The American culture has a wide variety of foods. There are many different ethnic foods that I have been exposed to by visiting numerous cities throughout the United States or through my friends that come from diverse ethnic backgrounds. My favorite food depends on my mood or the time of the year. I would have to say a simple BLT - Bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich is one of my all time favorite foods. While simple and easy to make, there is nothing like a fresh BLT on any given day. Others contend that the perfect BLT is just that: bread with perfectly cooked bacon, succulent slices of tomato and crisp lettuce leaves with maybe a hint of mayonnaise. I believe there is some subtle differences in constructing this summer food favorite however that set a perfect BLT from the typical sandwich. The bookends of this concoction start with bread. Others like to toast their bread to a light brown using many different types of breads. I prefer plain old untoasted white bread. The bread should be so fresh that you can still smell the fresh bakery aroma when you open the loaf and it sticks to the roof of your mouth when you chew into it. The typical BLT calls for a light lathering of mayonnaise but I prefer to use a heavy dose of tangy Miracle Whip. This gives the sandwich a dressing with more flavor than boring mayonnaise does. The quality and freshness of the core ingredients that give this sandwich its name is what sets a good BLT from the rest. Perfectly cooked, Applewood, sweet, salty, smoky thick cut bacon that is crispy, but not burned provides the perfect meat filling. Introducing frigid, emerald, crisp, butter lettuce on top of the bacon brings the freshness and texture that compliments the meat perfectly.
