Describe and comment on the use and development of digital applications within Textile Design Digital technology is a key element in our lives today and has helped shape our society in recent years. Within art and design it’s become an increasingly important tool and with the launch of Adobe Photoshop, illustrator and other design packages has become an integral part of today’s design community. Digital design technology in textiles ranges from manufacture e.g. digital fabric printing, embroidery and laser cutting to the many CAD applications. As textile designers, we are principally involved with conveying our ideas in a decorative context. Our world consists of pattern, colour and texture applied considering size, scale and application. Through use of digital applications we are able to greatly manipulate many thoughts and ideas and create a wealth of design ideas. We are able to create several versions of on piece of work, varying the qualities mentioned above. In recent years the invention of the internet has given designers a new tool to help them articulate their ideas. In 1989 Apple Mac released their first portable computer and this soon became a popular tool used in all creative design scenarios. From here onwards various software companies have developed a range of ever improving programs, which have helped revolutionise how we communicate our creative thoughts. From Photoshop to illustrator and flash, designers can now articulate their ideas in a much more sophisticated manner to help them meet their client’s needs. The competent use of these programs is seen as an art form itself and many designers today regard computer aided design as their main practice. We can create work entirely on this software without any practical input. The programming of these platforms is incredibly complex and therefore there are endless possibilities and options. Within
