Dependency on Computers i Dependency on Computers in the Field of Education Blair Cooper ENG 302 BV Dr. Jerry Horowitz February 21, 2011 Dependency on Computers 1 Dependency on Computers in the Field of Education People are becoming increasingly dependent on computers, which are used in almost all areas of our lives, like air travel, law enforcement, medicine and the military. One particular area is the field of education. Some people say that computers in the classroom are a good thing, while others are suspicious of their overall benefits to the student. I will show that the advantages of the computer in the classroom will outweigh the disadvantages. One advantage is that computers act as a teacher’s aid. With class sizes increasing, a teacher can spend only a limited amount of time with each student. A report entitled Computer Advantages: Tutoring Individuals quotes doctor of psychology Frederick Bennett as saying “with computers as tutors, no student will be overwhelmed because he or she is missing the fundamentals. The computer will repeat the material until each lesson has been sufficiently mastered” (Bennett, 1999, p.3). Computers will give all students in the classroom an opportunity to adequately learn the lesson of the day. Another advantage of the computer in the classroom is to prepare the student to be computer literate. The United States Department of Education
