The Dental Dilemma Purpose: to emphasize the importance of dental flossing. Introduction I. All of us have gone through dental hygiene instructions which unfortunately fall upon deaf ears. II. All of us have a wide range of excuses to avoid flossing our teeth (Craig, 1976). III. I went to dental school and realized I cannot preach what I do not practice. IV. I became a faithful flosser. V. Today I am here to convert the non believers and make flossing an interesting fun activity in our daily routine. Body I. Definition of dental flossing (Merriam Webster dictionary and thesaurus, 2009). A. A waxed thread used between teeth spaces to clean them. II. Why is it so important to floss? A. Our teeth are shaped in a way that they contain interdental spaces between them. B. Interdental spaces are inaccessible to regular toothbrush. C. Flossing in addition to brushing was found to reduce the incidence of interproximal caries by 50% (Wukins, 1999). III. Why don’t we floss? (American Association of Periodontology, 2002). A. Hands are too big and no dexterity. B. Floss pushes food further down into pocket. C. My gums bleed. D. I get my teeth professionally cleaned twice a year. E. It takes too long. F. It gets in the way of my sex life. G. Losing teeth is a part of ageing. H. My teeth are too close together to floss them. I. I am afraid of damaging my gums when I floss. J. I went hiking and forgot to bring floss. IV. How to floss? A. Technique of Flossing (Doniger, 2004). B.
