Date: August 18, 2008 To: Kim Vellozzi, BBA 3113 From: Kimberly Allen RE: Why Are Flights Delayed? STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Air flight delays have been a major problem over the last three years. Why are flights delayed? Various reasons cause air flight delays; one reason is due to weather related issues while another is due to the number of aircrafts in the air at the same time. Although these are very valid reasons, these may not be the main reason so many flights are delayed on a constant basis. The reality is that a delay at one airport can trickle to other airports. The data set contains information for five major air lines: AirTran Airways, US Airways, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways and US Airways over a 3 year period. The elements are: Air Carrier Delays, which include maintenance and crew problems, baggage loading and fueling. National Aviation System (NAS): non-extreme weather conditions, airport operations, heavy traffic volume, air traffic control and late arriving aircraft. In looking at the data it is evident that as the price of gasoline per gallon increases, as does the delay in aircrafts. We also conclude that airlines want to save on fuel so they purposely delay and cancel flights to combine smaller populated flights together. The data we have concludes that in 2007, on an average of five airlines, weather was the primary reason for flight delays with late aircraft being the secondary.
