Deforestation is the reduction of forested areas by human activities which results in the permanent loss and destruction of forested areas. This essay will focus on the case study of deforestation in Kalimantan and aims to show that deforestation brings about more benefits than harm for humans. Firstly, deforestation allows for the expansion of agricultural activities. It allows more land area to be freed up for small holdings to plant food crops like maize, which in turn may be sold for profit and thus benefit the economy. Besides this, it also allows for the planting of cash crops such as oil palms, which are relatively cheap to grow, which can further benefit the economy. For instance, in Kalimantan, about 10,000 square kilometres of forest was cleared in order to free upland area for oil palm plantations between 1998 and 2003. This in turn can increase government revenue and further the economy. Thus, it may be seen that deforestation to expand agricultural activities can be very beneficial to the economy. Secondly, deforestation allows the growth of various industries, such as the logging and mining industries. For example, logging may bring about deforestation but it allows for the procurement of various useful materials such as timber, in particular tropical hardwoods such as teak, which may be found in Kalimantan. Also, the mining industry allows humans to procure various useful and valuable materials such as gold, silver, and copper. The metals are very useful as raw materials in other industries such as the IT industries, which require good electrical conductors such as silver and gold, and also other industries which deal with electronics, which commonly requires the use of copper. Thus, we may see that the growth of industries may be promoted through deforestation and deforestation is necessay to allow these industries to grow.
