Definitions Paper OI 361 February 28, 2011 Definitions Paper Innovation, creativity, and design each share a common ground as individual building blocks to developing an idea, implementing the idea, and further transforming it into reality. An organization can substantially benefit by hiring individuals who can be innovative, creative, and design-oriented because these qualities collectively generate a competitive edge. In this paper, the subjects to compare and contrast are innovation, creativity, and design. Such will include definitions on each term as well as discuss their business implications. Innovation is the formation, development, and implementation of a novel product, process, or service in which the goal exceeds current standards and improves effectiveness and efficiency giving way to a competitive advantage (Innovation, 2010a). Furthermore, innovation embraces the introduction of something new despite qualifiers concerning how groundbreaking or earth shattering such needs to be, only that the new idea or process is better than it was before. In business, innovation results from the application of a scientific or technical idea in closing the gap between the wants or expectations of consumers, and the performance of a company’s goods or services (Innovation, 2010b). Further implications involving innovation acknowledge that a business needs creativity however, if innovation is not a part of the package, the possible advantages like market position and revenue will be lost. Most often, innovation, and creativity are thought to be synonymous and therefore, used interchangeably. However, being creative concerns developing the idea or plan without the knowledge or ability of putting the plan into action.
