Cole Chandler Dr. Hasell English - 6 Athleticism Athleticism is a natural talent or trait that cannot be taught or learned. It is what defines someone as a good player in sports. It shows that someone has the necessary competitive ability and strength to perform well. The people that truly stand out and give an advantage to a team are the ones that show true athleticism. One could argue that someone who is healthy and exercises a lot is athletic. A person that shows real athleticism though has a god given ability to excel in sports where others just lack talent. The thing about athleticism is that it is easily recognizable. People can tell whether or not someone is athletic usually by just looking at them. It is a sporty look, almost intimidating in a way. That person looks like they are a challenge to compete with physically. Athletes do not just look like it either, they show it. When they run it’s fast, when they move it’s agile, and if they compete it is to win. Now athleticism is different from a winning attitude or good character. Someone that is an athlete may have tremendous talent but no heart for what they do. This is what separates the good athletes from the great ones that inspire others. The word is derived from ancient Greek. The Greek word athletes means combatant in public games. It was originally used to describe athletic contests like the Olympics. Olympic champions are looked upon as some of the greatest athletes in the world. There is a difference however between athletes and champions. Champions work for there ability to be an athlete and they give great effort no matter what to achieve being the best. Someone that has athleticism but does not give forth there best effort at all times may as well be any other person on a team. Chandler
