This brand-new product excels its predecessor in many aspects, and it is widely welcome by customers around the world. However, its advantages coexist with its weaknesses. Therefore, it is in crisis recently when competing with its main archrival, blue-ray format DVD. This essay will define HD DVD by analyzing its benefits as well as shortcomings. HD DVD, standing for high-definition DVD is developed and devoted by Toshiba. Due to applying new techniques, HD DVD holds several distinctive superiorities. The main advantage of HD DVD is the high audiovisual qualities it provides. The video system applied by HD DVD is so called HDTV which can satisfy large screens better than traditional systems. Simply put, the visual quality is improved. The maximum resolution that HD DVD can provide is over 1,000 pixels, which is triple what original DVD can produce. Besides this, the audio quality of HD DVD is highly evaluated as well. Another benefit of HD DVD is the large capacity. In general, the capacity of HD DVD is twice as large as original DVD’s. The price of HD DVD is rather reasonable by considering its perfect specifications. For instance, the price of a HD DVD player sold in Wal-Mart is $99, which is almost the same as a DVD player’s. On the contrary, the weaknesses of HD DVD are apparent and even fatal. The main shortcoming of HD DVD is related to the deficient support it gains both from manufacturer and studio. Currently, only two major studios stand for HD DVD. Several studio giants like Disney have publicly stated their supports for blue-ray format DVD.
