This essay will outline and evaluate some of the most innovative and prominent areas of development, in the person centred approach since the death of Rogers. It will focus on some of the key figures to contribute to these developments, and how they impacted on the style of Person centred therapy. The Person centred or Rogerian Approach is based on concepts from humanistic Psychology and was developed in the 1930’s by American Psychologist Carl Rogers. It was a move forward from previous therapies such as Freud’s psychoanalysis which placed the therapist in a detached superior form over the client. In person or client centred therapy as it is also known, the client and therapist are viewed as equal and it was Rogers who established that the person should be referred to as ‘client’ instead of ‘patient’ as his previous successors had done.
A History and Systems of Psychology Jillian Valdez PSY/310 June 22, 2012 Instructor: Laura Rolen A History and Systems of Psychology As Hermann Ebbinghaus said, “ Psychology has a long past, yet its real history is short.” The act of pondering life and what it is about has been around since the beginning of time, and these acts are known as philosophy. Though psychology derived from philosophy about 130 years ago it is not another name for philosophy (C. James Goodman, 2008). The main difference between philosophy and psychology is the science that has become involved in psychology. Psychology started to exist during the time of Greek philosophers around Aristotle and the renaissance. It took until the end of the 19th century for
He believed that psychologists should have greater involvement in the study of and treatment of psychological disorders. He was interested in problems of psychopathology, and in 1906 Prince founded the Journal of Abnormal Psychology which is still published today. The journal was considered to be an exclusive domain, publishing early research and case studies. The journal was an important outlet for professional psychologist such as, Joseph Jastrow, Walter Dill Scott, Robert Yerkes, and many others. Prince published his most famous book in 1905, The Dissociation of a Personality, it was one of the first and had the complete descriptions of a case of multiple personality disorder.
Every clinician must decide which theory best aligns with his or her own views and apply as necessary. In many cases, a combination of several theories offers the best explanation. Whether one believes that nature has more influence on personality and behavior or believes nurture offers the best explanation, the debate will continue. Dave Pelzer offers one example of an individual who possessed the inner strength to overcome his early, horrific, and violent exposure to life. By studying experiences such as his, and applying theory, clinicians answer many questions, yet in doing so raises more.
Ever since our species first stood upright and gained cognitive skills we have sought the meaning of life and to understand our own self better. Whenever mankind is presented with a behavioral pattern that is different or varies from the normal thought pattern then we seek information in an attempt to explain and understand the behavior. Thus, psychology has been evolving since the beginning of time and while many of the first writings during the Greek ages are suggestive of the transition between philosophies into psychology, it began much
Moreira (2012) stated, “Humanistic-phenomenological psychotherapy is a contemporary development of person-centered therapy” (p. 3). Carl Rogers was an influential psychologist as well. The article on Carl Rogers describes his findings and the importance of his research and how these findings are researched even further. Many changes have been made to the Rogerian theory, which originated from a clinical theory of psychotherapy, Rogers work expanded into other areas such as education (Moreira, 2012). Psychologists and researchers around the world have continued the study of Rogers’s person-centered
Almost every introduction made formally of cognitive science stresses that psychology, neuroscience, education, philosophy, linguistics, biology, anthropology, and computer science are principal branches to the scientific research of cognitive science (Encyclopedia-Cognitive Science, 2003). Several approaches have been taken when it comes to the study of cognitive psychology. The broad classifications are approached as connectionist, dynamic, and symbolic systems (Encyclopedia-Cognitive Science, 2003). Cognitive science has given much to cognitive psychology; too much to list. Among only a few of its accomplishments, cognitive science gave eye opening attention to models of risk perception, human bias, and
