In 2010 we still hear all sorts of stories about how people of a certain race or disability are discriminated against. I feel since Mairs’s essay was written in 1987 things in the media has changed but not to the extent she was looking for. In the paragraphs below I will show some examples of shows currently on the air with mixed views and some statics from Employer's Forum on disability. The TV show extreme makeover is about a home makeover for unfortunate families with devastating illnesses or disabilities. Some people look at this show and say it exploits the disable.
Lindsay Barnard Jon Paul Henry English 1130:054 30 June 2013 Argument Analysis: Paul Stuewe’s “Better Dead Than Read” vs. Timothy Findley’s “Better Dead Than Read: An Opposing View” The invention of the VHS in that late 1970’s brought about the spread of more readily available pornography, and ever since, censorship vs. free speech has become a topic of frequent debate. Censorship evokes strong emotion in many people. In 1978, a group of self-appointed censors, calling themselves the Concerned Citizens of Huron County, Ontario, campaigned to have Margaret Laurence’s novel “The Diviners” banned from high schools in the area. Because the book contains strong language and sexual scenes, the Concerned Citizens insisted it was inappropriate to be taught in the Grade 13 curriculum. After his visit to Huron County, Journalist Paul Stuewe responds seemingly in favour of this instance of censorship in an article entitled, “Better Dead Than Read”, which broadcasts the opinions of two spokesmen for the Concerned Citizens group.
Two images, the refrigerator and the television would probably dominate a glance at modern civilization. Television is the center of most homes. Families generally spend downtime with the rest of their family watching a TV program. Keeping this in mind it is easy to realize how much of an impact that the content broadcasted on television has on the human race. The writer of a TV show, especially today, has a highway to communicate with the entire world.
They kept re-running the footage to emphasize the tragedy and keep America’s focus, not so viewers that were just tuning in could see. Nobody wanted to state the obvious that, “We’ve Seen This Before” (140). The news footage looked like it was from a horror movie and because it was not realistic it made it seem like it was not actually happening in real life. Everyone is so used to seeing events like this in movies, but they are not used to it real

Even though they are being fazed out on television, soap operas are prime example of shows that push the envelope. But before they air, the FCC has already viewed the show. The FCC is more worried about shows that are viewed lived. In 2004, during Super Bowl 38’s halftime
Again sadly people flip on the television; see the reports reporters found of Iraqis begging that we get out that we have only made things worse, they see that our government spends too much money on the war, and that x amount of soldiers died that day. Talk about only hearing one side of the story. Then these people go around and try and argue that one side completely oblivious to all the positive things we have done over there that really outweigh those negatives. Yeah life in Iraq is dangerous right now, but they don’t have a dictator running all over their country anymore. Yeah our government spent a lot of money last month on military expenses, but I say if money buys freedom then that’s money well spent.
Should Censorship be More or Less Strict? Censorship has been around basically since TV started, and ever since Elvis's provocative hip thrusts, censorship has been a debate about whether or not it was necessary. TV censorship in the past few years has been a hot topic of debate. With times changing in general it seems many things are becoming less strict, and TV censorship is one of those things. Some people say it's fine that culture now is more lenient.
Censorship is making terrestrial radio monotonous and it is driving many national figures to satellite radio for freedom. Howard Stern is just one of the major people who have left regular radio for satellite radio. Censorship on regular cable television is also expanding to become a problem with airing shows and many people have resort to extra cable packages such as HBO. Censorship is a violation of ones rights and it should be lessened on both radio and television. It is vital that people in the United States should continually to protect free speech.
Mark Ecko Mr. Boss ENG 100 13 April 2015 T.V. Professor For decades television has been plagued by viewers and critics alike on doubts of its intellectual stimulation abilities. On one hand you have television fanatics who claim that television is enriching our lives by providing an infinite supply of brain enriching media. While on the other side you have anti-television Nazis who boast that television is kicking our dogs and giving us brain weggies. I would like to focus on the effects of educational television on children.
