Death of a Salesman Study Questions Act 1 Scene 1 Willy’s house is a small house that is surrounded by other apartments. His house has only a few rooms which consist of a kitchen which leads you right to the living room. On the other side of the kitchen is a bedroom which is raised two feet off of the main floor level. Behind the kitchen there is the boys’ bedroom which is raised six feet from the main level which consist of two beds and a stairway from the kitchen. The entire setting is nearly transparent because the house is only one dimensional. He came back from driving and suddenly does not feel well, possibly due to the coffee he drank up in Yonkers. It appears the Willy is getting older and he can not deal with the commuting for work and all the hard work he has to do due to him being a sixty three year old man. The author Arthur Miller used the techniques in this section which are surrealistic are by having Willy day dream and reminisce about his days in the past. Willy relates to his days when he was driving a 1928 red Chevy. There is tension between Willy and Biff because Willy criticized Biff for working at manual labor on farms and horse ranches in the West. Willy expects Biff to amount to so much more because he was so successful in high school and everyone would follow him around in high school praising him and admiring him. Willy gives us the feeling that he is being boxed in because the street he lives on is lined with cars. There is not much fresh air in the neighborhood. The grass does not grow and you can not raise a carrot in the backyard. Willy feels he can not really leave the house because he thinks the neighborhood has been ruined and he can not do anything outside so he has to be constantly
