DBQ Theme : Reconstruction
After the Civil War, rebuilding the ruined South was a tremendous job. Just as troubling was the task of bringing the former Confederate states back into the Union. Should southerners who had fought against the United States government be welcomed back or treated harshly? How could the nation protect the newly won rights of freed African Americans? During a period called Reconstruction, North and South slowly reunited. At the same time, the economy of the South slowly recovered, and African Americans in the South gained several important rights and freedoms. However, in the years following Reconstruction, many of these rights were lost. The United States met with many successes during Reconstruction, but it also committed many failures in trying to reunite the divided nation.
Usually thought of as a positive era, the Reconstruction period held both pro's and con's. However, Reconstruction also included many major changes that have shaped the United States into what it is today. Some of these major changes included the whole new class of Freedmen, the South industrializing, and the former-confederate states' new constitutions, and more. Immediately following the end of the Civil War, slaves were freed. Almost overnight, a whole new class of people was added to this already struggling country. Over four million Freedmen and their masters needed to adjust to emancipation. After the war, freed men and women had no money, no land, and very few skills. Many slaves became sharecroppers, which engulfed them in a cycle of poverty (Doc 4). Each spring, they received supplies on credit, and in the fall, they had to repay what they borrowed. If their harvest did not cover what they had borrowed, the freedmen sank deeper debt. This further separated the whites and the blacks, as it gave the whites the power to control the blacks' financial situations. Also, the South faced a great change during Reconstruction.
