Which of the first 3 disciplines (Self-awareness, Self-Management or Self-development) do you find most difficult to incorporate into your life at this time? The discipline I find most difficult to incorporate into my life at this time is Self-Awareness, more specifically my lack of boundaries. Henry Cloud and Steve Townsend have identified four problematic boundary types: compliants, avoidants, controllers and nonresponsives. Each condition carries a set of potential pitfalls for spiritual leaders, especially if they are unaware of the boundary violation.[1] Of the four mentioned, I would have to put myself in the compliants category at this time. Compliants are people who allow others to violate their personal boundaries, mainly because they don’t want to “hurt others’ feelings,” consequently, compliants have a tough time saying no to people, even when the request for time or attention is out of line or too demanding.[2]Saying “No” is becoming a real issue, especially in light of taking classes at this time. Which of the three would you say you have had the most success incorporating in your life? Great leaders are great managers…not just managers of projects or other people but mostly of themselves.[3]The discipline that has been most successful for me has been Self-Management. I do not believe it came naturally, but has become a learned behavior during my time spent in the military. What strategies have helped you? Two of the most important of these in my opinion is managing my feelings and managing my time. Learning that emotional outbursts never really work in the long run, I have learned over time, to keep from reacting to a situation in the moment, I try to wait till time has passed before I respond. As for time management, procrastinating is not for me. I much prefer taking care of things as soon as I need to, so I do not have
