Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. - Martin Luther King, Jr. Without darkness, we cannot appreciate the Light. As we look in at John 1:5, we see that the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. Without darkness, one can not have light. We see that no matter how big the darkness it can never overcome the light. Darkness is defined as the absence of light; blackness; obscurity; gloom. Gen. 1:2 states “and darkness was upon the face of the deep.” Darkness is also referred to as a state of ignorance or error, especially on moral or religious subjects; hence wickedness. John 3:19 says, “Men loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil.” Darkness in contrast with brightness is an absence of visible light. It is the appearance of black in a color space. When light is not present cells within the eye are not stimulated. This lack of stimulation means cells are unable to distinguish color frequency. The resulting perception is achromatic, and in the case of darkness, black. The same is true of a heart that is without the Light. A heart with out the light of Jesus is often referred to as a black heart or a dark heart. The opposite of darkness is light. Light is defined as something that makes vision possible; God as source of spiritual illumination and strength. In John 8:12 Jesus says,” I am the Light of the World. He who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but have the Light of Life.” Just as the eyes use light to perceive color and images, the heart also uses Light to choose which path it will take, Light or darkness. “God is Light.” (1 John 1:5). Just as light defines Gods character and spirit his substance, even so light defines His activity. John does not say
