Dancehall Queen The term gender according to Eitzen and Baca-zin (200) refers to the social identity of men and women. It can also be defined as the socially constructed roles, behaviours, activities and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women. We will highlight three aspects of gender in the movie: gender roles, gender inequality and gender and power. In the movie Dancehall Queen gender roles are depicted in different ways. We will first look at the character of Marcia. Marcia’s first role was ascribed that of a mother of two girls. [pic] As a single mother she had to assume the role of bread winner, the head of the family. Therefore she also played the part of father. Marcia younger brother should be able to play the role of father but, could not because of events in the progression of the movie. This caused the dilemma of role conflict where Marcia as minority women had to dwell in a world defined by those in dominant positions such as Uncle Larry, Priest and having to make ends meet. She had to struggle with the role of being of mother and a dancehall performer. In addition the thought of being a good or bad mother, ( after all a good mother do not wear revealing clothing and dance for a living). Marcia's daughter, Tanya, shows the general expectation of the gender role of a mother, when she discovered her mother rehearsing the role of dancehall queen: “Mama, is that you?” Women in the Jamaican society are struggling with same problem of multiply roles as there are a lot of single mothers who have to play the role of both mother and father if the family is to survive. Subsequently to this, according to Haralambos and Holborn (200) although a system of patriarchy continue to exist as a result of recent changes as mentioned above older women will be more likely than younger women to be involved in a more domestic gender
