The play Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand is a french romance. In this play both Cyrano and Christian fall in love with Roxanne. Cyrano is a very talented man, but has a very awkward appearance. Christian is a very good looking man but does not possess the kind of talents that Cyrano does. Roxanne is a very attractive woman who is looking for someone to love her for who she is and not just because of her looks. At first she meets Christian and begins to develop a crush on him. Christian asked Cyrano to write letters to her because he can't write poetry well. Cyrano, being the good friend he is, writes letters for Christian and Roxanne falls in love with him, not knowing that Christian is not even writing them. This makes Cyrano upset because he doesn't want someone else taking credit for his poetry that he means towards Roxanne. As the play progresses Roxanne begins to fall in love with the wrong person and doesn't even know it. The central conflict in this play is Cyrano loves Roxane but due to his lacks self esteem he feels like he is too ugly for her to ever love him. In order to be with Roxane, Cyrano needs to overcome his lack of self-esteem that comes from his awkward appearance and big nose. Once he is able to do that he needs to tell Roxane that he is the one that has been writing her love letters, not Christian. The protagonist of this play is Cyrano and the antagonist of this play is this Count De Guiche. Cyrano is the protagonist because throughout the play he shows himself to be a very loyal and good person. He does not try to cause anyone harm or destruction at any point. Count De Guiche is the antagonist because he gets in the way of Cyrano and Christian and tries to have sex with
