The current legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures within the UK Home Nation affecting the safeguarding of children and young people revolve around several acts. These include; The United Nations Convention for the Rights of the Child. (1989) (UNCRC) Protection of Children Act. (1999) Safeguarding Vulnerable Children Act. (2006) Childcare Act. (2006) The Children’s Commissioner for Wales Act. (2001) All settings working with children and young people should establish and maintain a safe environment and deal with any circumstances where there could be a chance of any welfare concerns. Through all their protection policies and procedures for the safeguarding of children and young people, all settings have an important role in the prevention of abuse and neglect. This could include helping children and the young people to protect themselves from abuse as well as any sort of bullying. The United Nations Convention for the Rights of the Child (1989) came to force in the UK on 16th December 1991. This act involves the children and young people’s rights to protection from any sort of abuse, the right to express their own individual views and opinions and to also be listened to. Also the right to care and services for disabled children or any children living away from home for any reason. There are many articles that relate to safeguarding under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, such as Article 2, ‘All children have these rights, no matter who they are, where they live, what their parents do, what language they speak, what their religion is, whether they are boy or girl, what their culture is, whether they have a disability, whether they are rich or poor. No child should be treated unfairly on any bases. “Rights” are things every child should have or even be able to do. All children have the same rights. The protection
