Short Critical Reflection Paper I will discuss and reflect back to information I read in Chapter 8 of the Introduction to Computer Literacy textbook. There are two types of learning models which are synchronous and asynchronous learning. Synchronous learning is where all students meet at the same time to attend class but in different locations whereas in asynchronous learning there is no specific time for students to meet (Bowles, Chapter 8.4, para. 3).These forms of online education has advantages and disadvantages. An advantage of synchronous learning is that a student can interact with the professor and classmates while in the real- time online class. It involves participation and one is able to ask questions and get feedback instantly. A disadvantage of this type of learning is if a student is not comfortable with the technology then he/ she will not be able to understand the concept of this learning method. Ashford University’s online class option is an example of asynchronous learning. An advantage of asynchronous learning is that the internet makes it possible and convenient for professors and students to link up in different geographical locations. Students do not have a specific time they have to log in to their portal. Another advantage is that it accommodates students that live in different time zones. Students are able to meet assignment deadlines no matter where they are located. A disadvantage of asynchronous learning is that a student does not gain the benefits of an on-campus experience and physically being in a classroom. A student may also feel disconnected from the professor and classmates. Another disadvantage of attending a virtual classroom is technology problems due to the system or software crashing or not being able to log into the portal.
