Lifespan Development is defined as the moment we are fist conceived, to the day we pass away. We all face changes in our life every day. In life we go through developmental stages. Each stage is marked by milestones in physical, cognitive, and socio/emotional development. These stages are birth, infancy, adolescence, adulthood, old age and finally death. During these stages we learn how to communicate and use our bodies. We also learn how to love and work. This paper will explore current issues dealing with lifespan development. The issue I attend to focus on is how society and cultural influences one’s Lifespan Development. Life has many factors that come together to help us grow mentally and physically. Our development is influenced by many factors and issues such as our environment and experiences we go through.
How does society influence our lifespan development?
Society is defined as an extended social group having a distinctive cultural and economic organization. It is all known to be a group of individuals who share a common system of customs, values and laws. A social influence occurs when a person’s thought’s feelings or actions are tainted by other people beliefs. I believe that a large portion of how we act and how we mature come from our surroundings and society. The influences of society are all around us. For example you always hear how the impact of education is important to society but how does society affect our education system. According to the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), cultural differences among students should influence pedagogy; that is, teachers should adjust instructional methods depending on the race, ethnicity and/or national origin of the child (Barret 2002). I also believe that to a certain extent we all live our life according to our society expectations. Society influences the way we act, how we dress, education, and our lifestyle.
