Curley’s Wife – Essay Draft We first hear about Curley’s wife when Candy is describing her to George and Lennie. He uses expressions such as ‘she got the eye’ to show that she is always looking out for something to do, and then goes on to say how most men on the ranch label her as being a ‘tart’. The way he says ‘the eye’ gives the reader the impression that she is bored and maybe even lonely, and she is always on lookout for someone to talk to. This first impression of her could make the reader think that she is going to be quite a twisted, flirtatious and promiscuous character. Later on in the book, the narrator gives a description of her physical appearance, and it opens the audience’s minds even more about what she is actually like. He says things like ‘full, rouged lips and wide-spaced eyes, heavily made up’ as well as her fingernails being painted red. Curley’s wife is often associated with the colour red, which suggests some sort of sexuality, romance or maybe even some danger. Furthermore, by the way the narrator uses the clause ‘heavily made up’, it, again, shows that by wearing lots of makeup and making a big effort in her appearance, it suggests she is seeking attention. This makes the reader question her relationship with Curley, because if their relationship was strong, she wouldn’t be so desperate for attention. She knows that her beauty is her power, so she is very clever in the way she uses it to flirt with most of the men. She is presented to be very nasty and intimidating as you can tell by the scene where she snaps at Crooks. He threatens to have him lynched by saying ‘Nigger, I could get you strung up a tree so easy it ain’t even funny.’ By calling Crooks a ‘nigger’ it shows how cruel she can be, and that she is a twisted woman that has a sly side to her. Also she mentions that she could string him up a tree ‘so easy’ which suggests she has a
