The Culture of Singapore There are many different cultures around the world. In these cultures there are many different factors that make them act and believe the way that they do. For example let’s look at the culture of Singapore. Singapore is an island located off of southeastern Asia, in between Malaysia and Indonesia (CIA, 2011). This culture is unique do to their kinship groups, political organization, and gender relations. Kinship is a system in which cultural define social relationships by marriage and birth (Nowak, 2010). Kinship is really a lot like family, some people call only their partners and their children their families. There some people call grandmothers, grandfathers, and other distant relatives as their family. That is how kinship works. However in the culture in Singapore does not really look to kinship as a way to survive, they use government for survival (Neville, 1966). However a recent poll done in Singapore states that the people of Singapore still value their families and have high thoughts on family values (Singapore, 2010). So after that poll was done the people may not use kinship for survival but the do still have it to take care of their families. Another thing about Singapore that makes its culture so unique is its political organization. A little brief history of the nation of Singapore; Singapore became self-governed in 1959 soon after the demise of British Malaya. In between 1963 and1965 Singapore became a part of Malaysia; Singapore finally became a republic in 1965. At the time of Singapore’s independence political power was taken by the People’s Action Party. The People’s Action party was led by Lee Kaun Yew (Grice, 1985). Currently in the election of 2006, the People’s Action Party won 82 of the 84 seats in the nation’s parliament (Janus, 2011). Before 1991 the parliament was responsible for electing the
