Culture plays an important role in ones life because it is a strong factor in shaping one's identity. Culture identity is one's own sense of culture. It is the influence one gains by belonging to a certain group or culture. It also refers to the traditions, customs, and practices that affect a person. In my life, culture identity is very important because it is who I am. It has shaped me into the person I am now. Coming from a Hispanic culture has had an impact on my beliefs, values, and norms. At times I struggle to find my culture identity because I am Mexican/American. That is why I consider myself to part of the third generation. Being raised in the U.S all my life has had an impact on me because it can be difficult to maintain the knowledge of my heritage because I have become more accustomed to the American culture. Family is usually at the center of the social structure, so family is very important in our culture. I grew up with Spanish being my first language and I was taught to always speak it formally, especially with my elders. Having a major respect for elders in the Mexican culture is crucial. I remember in school getting stereotyped or prejudged for this by kids. Kids would sometimes call me a “goodie, goodie” for greeting an adult with a handshake or simply being really respectful. Or sometimes I would get picked on for eating my food a certain way than other kids. At the time I did not understand why kids would react like that because it was how I was brought up. Family I would say is the most important value in my culture. It is important that we stick together as a family. Not only with immediate family but extended family as well.
