Cultural Issues in International Business Personal experience in a multicultural team Personal experience in a multicultural team In this brief essay, I will reflect on my individual experience of working in a multicultural team. Due to the limited space provided (1-2 pages), the goal is not to give an exhaustive overview of my experience. Rather, I will focus on these topics and issues I have found to be of crucial importance when working in a multicultural team. Firstly, the advantages and disadvantages of working in a multicultural team are discussed. Secondly, I will cover some task and process strategies to reap the potential benefits of a cultural diverse team. Finally, I will discuss the personal skills required to effectively work in or manage a multicultural team. I would first like to start with a small side note: due to the limited cultural diversity in our team, I will sometimes refer to a team work I was part of in a previous course. However, as much as possible, I will stick to experiences in this course. In the literature, the most cited advantage of a cultural diverse team over a monocultural team is the wider range of perspectives which leads to a better problem definition, a greater ability to generate alternatives and consequently to find a better solution. In my personal experience, I have found this very much to be the case. Just the fact that people come from different backgrounds or cultures makes them look at similar problems from very different perspectives. Therefore they also come to different solutions for the same problem. When it is possible to thoroughly discuss all these different opinions, this will lead to a higher level of problem solving.
