I. Do you agree with the film’s premise that the Corporation is the dominant institution of our time? Why or why not? The Corporation is one of the dominant institutions of our times, due to the fact that it is powerful enough to transform people’s lives on a global scale. In my opinion, there is a different view of the context a corporation is used upon and I will refer to the difference of a corporation in the United States and the context of a corporation in countries like Russia and China. In the United States, 99% of the wealth is captured by 1% of the population. This is a fact well known and well debated globally: i.e. Apple’s balance sheets have a better cash flow than the entire state of US. Should we look further into the political campaigns, it is also a fact that major corporations finance these long and costly campaigns in order to support the decision makers that will “assist” them with pursuing their objectives. On the other end, looking into Russia, China, another trend arises that point to the opposite direction. Governments are the dominant institutions and they have the power to influence the lives of their populations. Both opinions have though a common goal in my point of view: direct or indirect control of the crowds with the ultimate goal of achieving profit to the shareholders and hopefully better people’s lives with their actions. II. What implications does your view have for the role of business and how it operates? In general, a corporation should operate on the basis of people who work together in order to serve a common set of objectives and act as corporate citizens. Therefore, the principal role of business should be aligned with the interests of the human societies and be a part of improving people’s lives.
