AP English per. 2 Mrs. Lantz 7 October 2013 Tragic Hero Essay In Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible”, a play about the 1690s witch trials in Salem, Massachusetts, can be described as a tragedy. Every tragedy must have a tragic hero, and in this case, John Proctor fit the criteria. Throughout the play, Proctor is faced with many dilemmas including his affair with teen Abigail Williams. The justification for John Proctor as a tragic hero can be seen through his admirable and good character, catharsis produced in the audience, tragic fall, and his free choice. John Proctor may not have been a king, but he still had high respect in the town of Salem. Since tragedy involves the fall of a tragic hero, one must have somewhat of a high position to fall from. The tragedy of Proctor would not only affect himself and his family, but also, the whole society of Salem. The fact the Salem court had the audacity to hang Proctor and Rebecca Nurse, people of a good name, there will be actions and consequences taken. The tragic hero must fall due to some flaw in his own personality. In John Proctor’s case he possessed hubris, excessive pride. “Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life...How must I live without my name? I have given you my soul: leave me my name.” Proctor’s tragic flaw is pride. He is not willing to give his name up to save his life. He would rather die with his name clean. The most important factor of a tragedy is the choice made by the tragic hero. In the star-crossed lovers’ tale of “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare, Romeo made the “tragic” choice to poison himself after thinking his “soul mate” Juliet was dead. In the case of John Proctor, he decided he would rather die with the “purity” of his good name than confess to a lie and ruin his name.
