Justice in Immigration In The Devil’s Highway, Luis Urrea portrays the terrible pain and suffering that illegal immigrants face on their journey to the United States. Urrea, however, gives little attention to the controversy of dealing with the illegals currently in the American population. One major question that arises in this category is whether or not U.S. employers should hire illegal immigrants and whether or not these employers are justified in the decision they make on the matter. With the impoverished economic situations in Mexico and many Latin American countries, it is easy to understand why many people choose to immigrate to America and into a land they have always heard offers opportunity for a better life. The real matter however,
Robber Barons People who have been considered “Captains of Industry” have also been given the title “Robber Barons”. Is there really a difference in the two? While Robber Barons have been known to take as many resources as they can from an area they are also known for giving little to those who help them become rich. Often times they come in with flowing promises of better homes and cleaner cities to entice workers to live there. However, many workers find that does not happen.
Mexico To USA Migration Push Factors There are incredibly high crime rates in Mexico, especially in the capital and drug related crimes are a major concern. It is thought that in the past five years, 47,500 people have been killed in crimes relating to drugs. Many Mexicans will move out of fear for their lives and hope that America is a more stable place to live, with lower crime rates. Unemployment and poverty is a major problem in Mexico and has risen dramatically in recent years. A large portion of the Mexican population are farmers, living in rural areas where extreme temperatures and poor quality land make it difficult to actually farm.
People argue that immigrants occupy the jobs that most natives don’t want but they are actually in competition with each other. The United States is already over saturated with unskilled labor as it is, and it would be unfair to allow illegal aliens to supplant access of employers to legal workers. So supplying the flow of legal workers must be the first priority. The reason so many immigrants work these undesired jobs is because they don’t have much education under their belt. The government is allowing immigrants to enter the country with less than satisfactory education skills.
Even though immigrants wanted to leave their home country to get better living conditions, they would have to find jobs, live without knowing how to speak the language and face immigration policies. Finding jobs as an immigrant was not that difficult but they would usually be forced to take the low paying jobs that were available. Living in the U.S. without knowing any English words was also difficult. Most immigrants would learn how to speak English since it was not easy to live there without a source of communication. Additionally, it made their daily lives more comfortable.
Cultural deviance theories for immigrants exist because they feel breaking laws instead of conforming to laws are their only hope to survive. If surviving means stealing, prostitution, or illegal immigration, immigrants will take this risk to rise above social stigmas. Prostitution among Immigrant Routes According to the Electronic Reading Reserve, University of Phoenix, immigrants are willing to do whatever it takes to cross the border and start a new live. For
Betsy Jimenez English Composition II Ms. Bonnie Lee January 7, 2013 Immigration, Arizona SB 1070 “Mexican Americans were dispossessed very much of their land and subject to discriminatory treatment in every aspect of their lives: in employment, in housing and in education. Overt discrimination is probably worst in Texas, where the state law enforcement agency known as the Texas rangers has long had a well-deserved reputation for brutality toward Mexican Americans”(Daniels, 314). History has proven to repeat itself throughout the years. As we grow stronger as a nation we have been pushing those who have helped us create America to the borders of embarrassment. By allowing racial profiling to be practiced, the Arizona immigration law
Discrimination Against Immigrants It is extremely difficult for immigrants to thrive in any foreign country, especially if their immigration status is an illegal one. The widespread perception that people commonly have about immigrants is that they are intruders who only arrived to any given country to take away that country’s native individual’s employment opportunities, to live on government benefits or to commit crimes. This is based on the fact that when people decide to leave their native countries, it is usually because they are looking for a better life than the one they had back in their place of origin and because of this they may accept jobs and work under conditions that others would not accept, and for example, they may work for lesser wages and without any kind of employee benefits. However, it is usually extremely difficult for immigrants to find jobs either due to the language barrier or because of their illegal alien status; therefore, they end up receiving countless government benefits, which end up being paid for by the common citizen in the form of taxes. Furthermore, some people see immigrants as gang members or even as guerrilla and cartel members who are used to lead a life of crime back at their countries of origin.
Illegal immigration is as old as U.S. immigration law... With changes in U.S. immigration law and economic and political conditions in the United States and other countries, the nature and characteristics of illegal immigration have also changed." Chiswick believes that the entire nature of illegal immigration has completely changed, and so should that of the laws America holds against them. Many economists believe that illegal immigration does not impact the country in such a negative way that many believe. For unskilled workers, illegal immigration may cause these people to be hurting of work, only because many times illegal immigrants choose to do work in a uncostly manner. Other than that, our country overall benefits from these people that we call “illegal aliens”.
Assaults, ransoms, kidnappings, drug trafficking, and organized crime in general are some of the most common in the country. Every day people face the risk that a loved one might become a victim of these terrible crimes. The people simply do not feel safe in their own country anymore, resulting in them deciding to leave it for a fresh start. Extreme poverty adds to the list of reasons why people immigrate to the United States. Poverty in Mexico has also increased in recent years.
