In 2012, Ingham County was home to 281, 723 residents according to the United States Census Bureau. The historical data of Ingham County up to 2010 shows an upward trend of poverty from 14.63% in 2000, to 20.58% in 2010 (usa.com). In Ingham County 11.5% of people make 10, 000 dollars or less a year which is considered extreme poverty, while 10.7% of people make 30-40 thousand dollars a year (usa.com). This may not seem like a high number or people who live in poverty or are struggling depending on the number of people they are supporting, but compared to the 2.5 percent of people who earn 250, 000 dollars or more in Ingham County, the percentage difference is to be a big difference. My biggest focus on Ingham County is the child poverty
Federal Tax Structur Over the last 40 years, the U.S. federal tax system has undergone three striking changes, each of which seems to move the federal tax system in the direction of less progressivity (Piketty & Saez, 2007). First, there has been a dramatic decline in top marginal individual income tax rates. Second, corporate income taxes as a fraction of gross domestic product have fallen by half, from around 3.5– 4.0 percent of GDP in the early 1960s to less than 2 percent of GDP in the early 2000s (Piketty & Saez, 2007). Third, there has been a substantial increase in payroll tax rates financing Social Security retirement benefits and Medicare. However, the conclusion that these three changes have reduced the progressivity of the
A large number (33 percent) of the poor live in inner cities, the suburbs, small towns, and rural communities. In 2008, one third of the nation's poor lived in suburbs. Myth #4: Most of the poor are single mothers. Of all families living in poverty,51 percent are single mothers and their children, but 40 percent of married-couple families and 9 percent of father-headed households are poor. Myth #5: Most of the poor are older Americans.
Homelessness is a big issue in the United States. Los Angeles, California is one of the biggest cities in this country, and has the largest population of homeless people. According to the Institute for the Study of Homelessness and Poverty at the Weingart Center, an estimated 254,000 men, women and children experience homelessness in Los Angeles County during some part of the year and approximately 82,000 people are homeless on any given night. In Los Angeles, the average age for homeless people is 40- women are typically younger. 20% are physically disabled.
Sitting at the top are those that have been unemployed for 15 weeks averaging about 8.5 million unemployed. Below them are those that have been unemployed 27 weeks and over averaging about 6.3 million unemployed. Why are there more unemployed at 15 weeks than 27 weeks? This may be the fact that people are finding jobs before they hit the 27 week mark. However, we may see a change in this if the economy stays as it is because all the people in that 15 week unemployment range are on their way to the 27 week unemployment range if a job cannot be found.
Childhood obesity is increasing at rates of epidemic proportion across the globe and is becoming a significant health problem. The current obesity rates in Australian children are among the highest in the developed world. ‘In 2007–08, one-quarter of all Australian children, or around 600,000 children aged 5–17 years, were overweight or obese, up four percentage points from 1995 (21%). According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABOS) (2009). ‘Research indicates an annual increase of this figure of 1-1.5%, a trend that suggests half of all young Australians will be overweight by the year 2025’ (Tipping the scales: Intervention and management of childhood obesity 2007).
People in poverty because of the economic decline. The number of people in poverty increased from twenty-three million people to a little under fifty million people according to a survey given (Sawit
The issue is the fact that still, 1 in 5 of these same youth live in very low income households. This is especially of grave concern given that the cost of living has shown a steady increase over the last ten years (Center for Health, “Los Angeles County Services for Transition Age Youth: Programs, Data, and Recommendations”). The report goes on to state that in 2006, the federal poverty level for a family of 4 was $20,444. Yet the California Budget Project announced that the Self-Sufficiency Standard for the same size family is $48,590. Finally, as indicated in the Los Angeles Almanac’s report on “Homelessness in Los Angeles County”, here are some important facts to consider regarding the homeless population in Los Angeles County: 1.
In a study published in 2013 by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing and The Forum of State Nursing Workforce Centers, it was shown that greater than half of the RN workforce is age 50 or older. The consequence of this data is the reality that within the next 15 years a significant portion of the current nursing population will be retiring, or taking their experience and moving into higher paying private sector jobs. Compounding the problems faced by the increasing age of the nursing community is the realization that for a lengthy period of time the government and university leaders underinvested in health worker education. This underinvestment has led to a younger group of nurses who are not well prepared for the personal responsibility of working in the healthcare industry. Along with the underprepared nurses, there is also the lack of youths choosing to enter the healthcare field.
As of September 2011, seniors accounted for 14.4% of the total population, an increase of 0.3 percentage points from 2010. Life expectancy has also risen to 81.38 years and median age to 39.9. The aged labour force has contributed ..........to GDP.
