Critically discuss Aristotle’s views on the role of experts in politics. Aristotle views of experts in politics leans to collective populace and that it is more sensible than the individual expert. The populace as a whole is less likely to make mistakes and should share communally in the judicial and deliberate offices of government. Experts should handle the government. The population experts should ensure that the population is being governed correctly as a whole. I will examine Aristotle’s view; on citizens, slavery, judicial participation, community input, role reason. Citizens for Aristotle are a kind of activity. “The citizen in the strict sense is best defined by the one criterion that he shares in the administration of justice and in the holding of office” (1275a21). Aristotle believes that each citizen should participate in the assembly directly and serve on juries to uphold the laws. He says “ one who is entitled to share in deliberative or judicial office is thereby a citizen of that city, and a city, in its simplest terms, is a body of such people adequate in number for achieving a self-sufficient existence.”(1275b16). So citizens would deliberate and participate in decisions that discuss the advantageous and the harmful. This would also include just and unjust, and pass laws by judicial decisions in a deliberative process. In our society there are few opportunities to contribute opinion directly in politics or avoid jury duty. Slavery is accepted in Aristotle’s time. Modern times do not accept slavery but it was still going around the 21st century. Slaves came from being defeated in was and this made them inferior. Another way you became a slave is if you were born into it, which made their inferiority obvious. Slaves were needed for labor so the men could participate in intellectual lifestyles.
