In addition, there has been a growing emphasis placed on equal rights. These two movements have contributed to keeping the argument for same-sex marriage in the forefront. There are people who believe that although progress has been made, Christian values are still an obstacle for the progress that needs to take place and Brittney Baker is one of them. She compares and contrasts the relationship between the religious and gay community’s attitudes towards same-sex marriage. She puts forth rebuttals to many of the typical arguments for prohibiting same-sex marriage.
The Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) of Topeka, Kansas, established in 1955 by Pastor Fred Phelps, is an example of a group that stretches First Amendment rights by preaching intolerance and hate. As stated on the WBC website, www.GodHatesFags.com: “We adhere to the teachings of the Bible, preach against all form of sin (e.g., fornication, adultery [including divorce and remarriage], sodomy), and insist that the sovereignty of God and the doctrines of grace be taught and expounded publicly to all men." (God). For better or worse, this church walks its talk. On its website, the church describes its activities: “WBC engages in daily peaceful sidewalk demonstrations opposing the homosexual lifestyle of soul-damning, nation-destroying filth.” (God).
He wanted them to know how oppressed the “black” people were with the injustice at that time. He hoped that the clergymen would have been on his side because they should understand the feeling of his people because they read in the Bible about Jesus going through the same oppression. The bible teaches us how to love each other no matter what color we may be. He wanted them to compare them to such ones in the Bible that felt like they were “outside agitators”. He used this nonviolent campaign to try to get
No matter what our struggle might be, we all need to fix our eyes on Jesus from whom we take our identity. “Many Christians have chosen not to let their attractions determine their identity (p 50). Since there is not a conclusive scientific evidence as to what causes homosexuality I prefer not to speculate any further and just accept the fact that some people do struggle with same-sex attractions and we must be clear on what our stand on it will be and how we plan to make a difference in those
The church is directly called to speak up against it and do as God calls us to do in order to stop the still growing crime. The church is the Body of Christ and if we do not stretch out the hand that God gave us then we will be like a barren vine that has heard the Word but has yet to live it. Paul also states in Philemon that he is very much a slave to Christ. A true Christian is bound to His teachings and to strive for the exemplary life that Christ lived just as a slave is bound to the chains of his master. There are many things that the church could do to prevent slavery today although the majority of those who are taking action do not know the love and bond of Christ.
Milk kept busy with protesting and giving speeches on gay rights and really enlightened many people’s thoughts on the topic. “several "educational" societies--designed to enlighten public opinion on the subject of homosexuality…For the first time in American history, "mainstream" political figures treated their homosexual constituents with dignity and respect, actively courting their support.” (Frances FitzGerald). Harvey Milk may not be remembered
I can’t speak for anyone in the audience but I can say that the speech had effects on my views because in all reality if two gay people do get married it doesn’t change a thing for most people. If you’re able to gain one audience member’s reason then, your speech has been effective even if the least bit. Because he was gay, talking about how it is unfair for banning gay marriage puts him in the middle of advantage and a disadvantage. It’s a disadvantage because we’re only getting the gay person’s perspective on gay marriage, but it’s an advantage because of the personal connections between him and his theory. Even though he faces the disadvantage, he was still thorough at getting his point across.
He believes that theological foundations are already under attack, and states that on June 3, a church in Canada made the decision to bless same sex unions in formal ceremonies. He believes homoerotic activity is against God, along with murder. Edith M. Humphrey only looked at homosexuality on the religious side, so therefore he didn’t have as many strong points as Dematteis
I think I both agree and disagree with how they portrayed certain issues in this movie. The conclusion of the movie ended with gays getting some rights, but on the other hand how homosexuals were treated throughout the movie was horrible and I definitely don’t agree due to my view and opinion on this issue. I am well aware that homophobia is a serious issue in todays society and you hear lot more about it today then what you would have ten years ago, and being gay is found a lot more common. I believe myself to have a strong understanding on the diversity in sexuality and more importantly discrimination. I have family members that are attracted to the same sex and I personally don’t think of them to be any different.
Olson dreams of social acceptance and equality for our nation. Shulman dreams of a nation with old fashioned moral traditions. I can respect both. I do however think Shulmans argument was a bit ridiculous. I have read much better article opposing gay marriage that had much more constitutional relevance.
